How to Use Tracking to Keep Income Incoming

Copyright 2005 Ron Hutton

The use of tracking links in the following scenario puts you in complete control when someone else makes a change that affects your webpages, your links on other peoples’ sites, or your links in ebooks or ecourses already in circulation. Additionally, the potential time savings in editing the pages that are within your control can add up to hours and hours saved for you.

NOTE: This article has a free companion video tutorial that demonstrates how to quickly and easily put yourself in complete control of your hard earned traffic. The video can be viewed here: http://www.gothrive.com/tkii.htm

Here’s the scenario…

1) You’re promoting someone else’s product as an affiliate.

2) You’ve built and uploaded multiple web pages with this affiliate link long ago.

3) You’ve written an ecourse with the affiliate link included in multiple messages.

4) You’ve created a viral ebook that’s been downloaded 5,000 times in the last 9 months and it includes this affiliate link.

Now, everything is rolling along quite nicely and you receive an email message from the owner / creator of this affiliate program advising you that they are launching new affiliate software on a new server and it will mean that your old affiliate links will no longer work - effective tomorrow. Ouch.

Without the use of tracking links, you’ll need to…

- Find every web page where this affiliate link is located, edit the pages and upload the updated versions.

- Edit your ecourse messages with the new revised affiliate link and update your autoresponder.

- Forget about all your hard work invested in creating your viral ebook because you can’t recall the ebooks and there’s no way to remotely fix the affiliate link.

Not only is this all quite unfortunate, but it’s going to cost you time and potential income lost. So, how can you avoid getting in this situation in the first place? Here’s the good news…

The solution that puts you in complete control is the use of tracking links. Instead of using the affiliate URL to link directly to the product or service, be the middle man with your own tracking link. Here’s how the traffic will flow…

1) Traffic lands on your web page and clicks the link you provide, which is a tracking link.

2) The visitor is directed to your tracking program, which in turn redirects the traffic to the affiliate program.

Simple enough, right? Absolutely.

The real beauty of this is that when you get the message from the affiliate program administrator announcing the news of their wonderful new affiliate program and your updated link, you say “Hey, cool. No problem.” You log into your tracking program’s admin panel, edit the target URL for your tracking link and your work is done in 60 seconds flat.

No editing and uploading of web pages. No editing or updating of autoresponders. No lost income from broken links in your viral ebook. It’s a beautiful thing.

The scenario will happen. It’s only a matter of time. Will you be able to successfully make all necessary adjustments in 60 seconds or will you be scrambling for hours? The answer is in your decision whether or not you use tracking links.

A Lightning-Fast Way to Grab Graphics for Your Website

Copyright 2005 Ron Hutton

Just the right photo or graphic strategically placed on your website can go a very long way to achieving the desired effect, whether it’s motivating someone to spend their money, click a link, download a free report or just keep reading. However, finding graphics that are available for your use without copyright infringement can be a real challenge when you don’t want to pay a huge subscription fee for access to professional photos and graphics.

NOTE: This article has a free companion video tutorial that demonstrates how to quickly and easily grap copyright-free graphics for use on your website. The video can be viewed here: http://www.gothrive.com/snag-a-photo.htm

As a marketer or webmaster you surely appreciate the fact that original graphics works on your website belong to you and as far as everyone else is concerned, the sign says “Hands Off”. It’s only fair. If your blood, sweat, tears and moolah went into the creation of your site’s graphics, you’d be upset if you found that someone else had blatantly stolen your copyrighted work and was using it for their own commercial purposes. That’s just not cool.

So, where can you go to find photos and graphics that you can use without having to spend an arm and a leg? Here are a couple of sites that offer tons of copyright-free pictures:

Stock.xchng http://www.sxc.hu/

I learned of Stock.xchng from another marketer and if I could remember this person’s name, I’d gladly give him credit. I’ve found the inventory of photographs available at Stock.xchng to be excellent, especially consider the cost! Here’s what you’ll read on their home page…

“Welcome to Stock.XCHNG, the leading FREE stock photo site!

Whether you just want to browse our huge image gallery or want to share your personal photos with others, this is the site for you!

Browse through the categories of our huge gallery containing over 100,000 quality stock photos by more than 9,000 users! Need a wallpaper for your desktop? Need a pic for your commercial website design? Looking for inspiration? Have a look around.”

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org

The following two paragraphs are quoted from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:About

“Wikipedia was created on January 15, 2001 by founders Jimmy Wales, Larry Sanger, and some enthusiastic collaborators. Three years later, as of December 2004, there were 13,000 active contributors working on over 1,800,000 articles in more than 100 languages. As of today, there are 700,437 articles in English; every day hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world make tens of thousands of edits and create thousands of new articles to enhance the amount of knowledge held by the Wikipedia encyclopedia.

All text in Wikipedia, and most images and other content, is covered by the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). Contributions remain the property of their creators, while the GFDL license ensures the content will remain freely distributable and reproducible (see the copyright notice and the content disclaimer for more information)”

You’ll find additional supporting documents and links to documents explaining the terms of use for graphics available at Wikipedia. You may find this site to be very useful.

So, now you’ve found a photograph that suits your purposes perfectly, but it’s provided in a high resolution file format that just won’t resize well. You’ve tried altering the image dimensions in your photo editing software and the resulting image quality is just plain poor. Now what?

My favorite program that solves this problem is call Snag-It. This outstanding little piece of software offers lots of slick tools and features, but as it applies to this discussion, the simple screen capture function is indispensible. More information on Snag-It is available here: http://snagit.gothrive.com and the following video will show you just how quickly and easily Snag-It will give you the perfect graphic for your website. Go here to watch a short demonstration of Snag-It: http://www.gothrive.com/snag-a-photo.htm

How Sneaky Links Increase Your Click-Throughs

Copyright 2005 Ron Hutton

If you find that your site visitors have developed a high level of resistance to clicking through your affiliate links, you’re not alone. What is it that makes affiliate links suspicious to people? They’re certainly not meant to be offensive.

I believe that it’s the same kind of thing that automatically activates your defenses when you walk onto a used car lot and are promptly accosted by a guy wearing a green and orange plaid sports coat, pink neck tie and white patent leather lowtops that zip up the side.

Do you hate the feeling that someone is “selling you”? I really think that it’s the same thing when visitors see what’s obviously an affiliate link (or a poorly disguised affiliate link) and start looking for a way to buy “straight from the source” thinking that they’re going to get a better deal!

If your website sells affiliate products, here’s a simple “Sneaky Link” tactic that will help you with affiliatephobes.

Note: This article has a free corresponding step-by-step video tutorial that demonstrates the exact steps to creating your own “Sneaky Links”…

http://www.gothrive.com/sneaky-link-video.htm

Street-smart webmasters and marketers understand the importance of taking every possible step to get visitors to let down their guard. We seek information but we resist being sold.

So, the following sample source code can be used on any web page to create “sneaky links” that don’t have the appearance of affiliate links. You’re not running a non-profit organization are you? No? Well, let’s just let someone else believe that you are.

Here’s an example of source code that will bare your soul to the world. Note: the tags are altered with a period that needs to be removed if you intend to edit and use this source code in your web pages.

No mysteries here:

< .a href="http://www.pluginprofittoolbox.com/idevaffiliate/idevaffiliate.php?id=100">Plug-In-Profit-Toolbox.com< ./a>

Now, let’s get sneaky. ;~)

< .a href="http://www.pluginprofittoolbox.com/idevaffiliate/idevaffiliate.php?id=100" onMouseOver="window.status='http://www.pluginprofittoolbox.com/'; return true;" onMouseOut="window.status=''; return true;">http://www.pluginprofittoolbox.com/< ./a>

To assist in understanding how the “sneaky link” works, let’s do a little link anatomy study. Here are the pieces and parts of our link:

Part 1, Beginning anchor tag: < .a

Part 2, Target URL (affiliate link): href="http://www.pluginprofittoolbox.com/idevaffiliate/idevaffiliate.php?id=100"

Part 3, "MouseOver" attribute: onMouseOver="window.status='http://www.pluginprofittoolbox.com/'; return true;" onMouseOut="window.status=''; return true;"

Part 4, Link Text: http://www.pluginprofittoolbox.com/

Part 5, Ending anchor tag: < ./a>

So, what’s the trick? It’s in part 3, the mouseover attribute. This nifty little piece of source code tells the web browser what to display in the status bar (very bottom of the browser window), and if the “window.status” is the same as the link text, it appears as though there’s no trickery going on. But, we know better.

Is it possible that this link could be found out, discovered and revealed for what it really is? Sure. If someone were to apply a single right-click to the link, the web browser will reveal the actual target URL. However, the average user won’t know this so the “sneaky link” tactic can be very effective in getting people to let their guard down.

End result… your click-through rate goes up, you make more sales and we all live happily ever after. Go forth and create some “sneaky links” now.

To view this article’s free corresponding step-by-step video tutorial that demonstrates the exact steps to creating your own “Sneaky Links”…

http://www.gothrive.com/sneaky-link-video.htm

There’s a zip file available for you to download (no cost, of course) with the exact source code that’s shown in the video.

How to Ethically Claim Ownership of Other People’s Information

Copyright 2005 Ron Hutton

If you’ve nearly given up on the thought of having your own information product, don’t give up hope now. Follow this simple plan and you’ll be publishing your own information products in no time flat.

1) Choose your topic.

Here’s your “Get Out of Jail Free” card. If you get beyond this point, you’ll have progressed further than 95% of all people involved with internet marketing. So, stop sweating it so much. Picking the topic isn’t the stumbling block that most people make it out to be.

You know what most interests you. Now find out if others share your same passion. Do some research to find out whether or not your topic is of any interest to others. The easiest way to gage the demand for your topic is to use a simple software application called Good Keywords, which is available free here:

http://www.goodkeywords.com/

Use the Good Keywords software to find the search frequency (looking at Overture, now Yahoo!) for your main keyword phrase. If your topic is specialized, then step back and look at the bigger picture to read the barometric pressure of your topic.

As an example, if you intended to publish your information product on the advantages / disadvantages of children’s tennis shoes that use Velcro straps in place of conventional shoe strings, your “main keyword phrase” might be “children’s tennis shoes” as opposed to “tennis shoes with Velcro straps”.

You’ll get differing opinions from one marketer to the next on what’s an acceptable level of “demand”. The prevailing opinion says that you should be looking for 50,000 - 90,000 searches per month (minimum) for you main keyword on Overture in order to make your project worthwhile. Well… I don’t like generalities much. These kinds of guidelines don’t consider the specifics of your product / service. Less may be OK.

Got your topic? Is there demand? Yes? Yes? Good. Let’s move on to part 2 of this plan.

2) Find a resource that offers rights (preferably without charge) to republish information on your chosen topic.

This is fairly easy. Here are some of the most popular sites that offer articles with reprint rights:

http://www.articlecentral.com

http://www.articlecity.com

http://www.ezinearticles.com

http://www.goarticles.com

http://ideamarketers.com
http://www.netterweb.com

http://www.turboarticles.com

http://www.valuablecontent.com

For additional reprint rights resources go to Google (http://www.google.com) and search for “your topic”+reprint rights articles. I just did this for “tennis shoes”+reprint rights articles and received 551 references. There’s an abundance of information that other authors would be tickled pink to have you share.

3) Identify products and/or services directly related to your topic that you can use to monetize your information product.

This step could involve your own products or affiliate products. If you’re unfamiliar with affiliate programs, you promote a product or service as an indepent contractor and the owner pays you a sales commission when visitors you refer make a purchase. That’s all there is to it.

4) Review and add commentary on the feature article.

When using an article or information source from another publisher, the normal requirement is that the article be republished in its entirety without alteration and that you included the original author’s “resource box” that credits them as the author. This resource box will have a link to their site and should not be changed or omitted.

Occasionally, you’ll find an author who offers reprint rights articles AND an affiliate program for their product. This is a beautiful thing, particularly if they allow you to replace the URL in the resource box with an affiliate link of your own.

Your objective at this stage of the game is to review the article that you intend to use and create an introduction of your own and a list of useful resources directly related to the topic being discussed. Simple enough, right? We’ll come back to this again shortly.

5) Published the above in an ebook format.

After creating your introductory commentary and resource list, you’re going to create your own ebook. This is not difficult; and with new innovations in ebook software, you’re going to look like a real pro even if you have no prior experience.

Here are the 3 sections of your soon-to-be-published ebook:

A) Introduction and commentary.

B) Reprint rights article.

C) Resource list.

The introduction can be text only, but if you truly want to connect with your reader, consider adding this as an audio feature.

And how about this?…

Why not read the reprint rights article that you’re using?

Again, the audio dimension will help you make a far better connection with your reader than text alone, and even though the article was written by somebody else, your voice gives you “ownership” in the mind of the reader / listener.

Don’t discount the powerful effect of audio. By representing yourself with a picture and audio, you’ve just acheived the status of a real live person. Bonds will be formed and defenses will come down. It’s a certainty.

The last component (C above) of this step will be to incorporate your “recommended resources” list, and guess what?…

This is where you can monetize your ebook. These recommended resources could include free tools and services, but also (and more importantly) they should include products that you either own or for which you’re an affiliate.

Is the picture coming together now? Great.

6) Offer your ebook.

This simple plan can be fully executed in a day’s time. It’s simple and you can have fun doing it. Create an entire series on your topic. Once you get your first ebook finished, you’ll be cranking out the next, and the next, and the next… Henry Ford would be proud of you.

So, what’s your first smash hit going to be?

Free Alternative to Microsoft Office

Copyright 2005 Jim Edwards

Anyone who ever priced the Microsoft Office Suite knows it represents a significant investment.

A quick check of the CompUSA.com website shows Microsoft Office Standard costs $399 and Microsoft Office Professional will set you back $449. Now, this doesn’t discount the value of the software.

In fact, the functionality in MS Office represents the true workhorse of home and small business computing, namely: word processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), presentations (PowerPoint), and desktop database applications (Access).

However, with the cost for such functionality at a premium, it comes as no surprise that a viable alternative emerged to challenge Microsoft’s position atop the office application market.

OpenOffice.org offers a suite of office software applications free to download for anyone with a computer, including PC’s operating with Windows or Linux.

Open Office also offers a free version for Macintosh computers.

Open Office offers its software freely to anyone who wants to download it.

Their all-volunteer organization, sponsored in large part by Sun Microsystems, operates with the noble goal of making productivity software available worldwide in 36 languages, particularly to economies that simply can’t afford the cost of other office solutions.

The Open Office software publishes in the Open Document Format to make data universally available (instead of using proprietary file formats that, for instance, make it hard to share between Microsoft Word and Word Perfect).

Open Office contains several main components, each of which help the user with specific tasks.

Writer - This software offers a full-featured word-processing program enabling the user to type letters, brochures, faxes, even entire books. No matter what you need to type, this program lets you do it. It also offers such features as spell check, auto-correction, and thesaurus.

Calc - Calc offers a spreadsheet program enabling the user to create cells containing text or digits, execute simple and complex calculations, database functions, and more. Calc is perfect for accounting spreadsheets, inventory and more.

Impress - Impress enables the user to create “slideshow” presentations containing text and images for use in sales or group presentations. Impress also allows the user to create impressive slide transition effects and eye-catching animation.

Draw - Draw gives the user the ability to create simple to complex drawings using vector graphics. Users can create drawings by hand, or incorporate an array of existing shapes, arrows, lines and other graphics.

Though it does represent an excellent alternative to expensive office software suites, Open Office is not without a few drawbacks.

Since they make the software available free of charge, tech support for the free version only lasts 30 days. Also, by its nature, the software is a “work in progress.”

As such, you will find bugs periodically that should get reported to the Open Office website so they can fix them.

However, despite these drawbacks, Open Office software rates a “must look” if you need word processing, spreadsheets and other capabilities we’ve naturally come to associate with home and small business computing.

How Non-technical Webmasters Are Harnessing the Power of RSS…

Copyright 2005 Ron Hutton

The opportunity to quickly and easily implement and harness the power of RSS is quite real and new programs become available every week that allow non-technical marketers and webmasters to capitalize on the effective use of RSS.

Jim Edwards spoke of this trend in the recent “For a Greater Cause” teleseminar. Media-rich blogs and content sites are stickier and keep visitors on site longer.

Consider delivering audio content via the internet by setting up a blog and incorporating streaming audio. By doing so, your media-rich message creates a relationship with visitors that cannot be achieved with text alone.

If you’d like to take this one step further, start using video content. It’s the difference between reading a flyer versus listening to the radio versus watching television. Why do people gravitate to the TV when every home has a radio? When presented with the option, we prefer the satisfaction of both the auditory and visual senses.

The real power of blogs, audio and video is that you can invite your visitors to participate and interact with you by allowing them to post comments. Your blog becomes a community event and we all love a party.

If you’ll be using the strategy of blogging with audio and video, there are three things that you should do.

First, as mentioned above, allow your visitors to post comments to your blog.

Second, always give visitors the opportunity to sign up for your newsletter or ezine directly from your blog.

Third, for those who prefer to receive news via RSS feeds, post your RSS feed on every page of your blog.

Recorded interviews with industry experts fed via podcast can raise your credibility simply by association. Arrange for a phone interview with an expert in your market area, get permission to record the call and post it to your blog. If you’re offering publicity and exposure for the interviewee, it should be simple to find willing and eager parties.

RSS offers you the ability to provide high frequency content updates. It can be daily or hourly. Deliver important messages, news and other content on demand rather that waiting for your regularly scheduled e-zine.

What’s next?…

Here’s where things get fun for the online marketer and webmaster. One area in particular where you can really start to take advantage of RSS technology is to build sticky content on your sites and monetize it with programs like Google’s Adsense.

RSS feeds are available in abundance that provide product news, press releases and updates. Sites such as PRWeb (http://www.prweb.com) want you to use their news feeds on your site. So why not? Build your site’s content with news and information feeds that deliver steady streams of traffic.

Do a bit of searching and you’ll find programs and scripts that make the addition of RSS feeds to your website very simple and fast.

RSS gives you an edge over your competition by allowing you to create a sense of community, offer interaction and provide the latest news and information nearly on autopilot.

Google’s Next Step: Are Print Mail Order Catalogs Dead?

Copyright 2005 Jim Edwards

One of the great joys of the holiday season involves receiving the stack of catalogs that invariably clog the mailbox at the end of my driveway.

Not withstanding the hernia I get from carrying them to the house, or the three acres of rainforest timber it took to print them, holiday catalogs provide a never-ending opportunity to look at stuff I don’t want to buy.

Unfortunately, when I do finally decide what I want to buy for those on my holiday shopping list, I find the one catalog I need mysteriously absent from the 6-foot stack.

Fortunately, a new service at Google makes hunting through catalogs to find the perfect gift for yourself or others an absolute breeze.

Log on to http://catalogs.google.com/ and test out Google’s latest offering in an attempt to organize all information on the planet.

At the time of this writing, Google’s database of catalogs boasts over 6,000 catalogs covering everything from golf to music to footwear.

The index allows you to browse catalog content either by entering keywords in a search box, or choosing categories in their directory-style listings.

If you want the latest L.L. Bean or Harry and David catalog (or any other), you can perform a search for a specific catalog by name.

If Google doesn’t carry a specific catalog, you can click the “Help Google Add More Catalogs” link on the main page of the catalogs directory to suggest they take a look at it.

I personally think Google is very serious about developing this service because they do something here I’ve never seen them do before: they provide a physical mailing address and invite you to actually “snail mail” them a catalog you want added.

I decided to put the service to the ultimate test by searching for what, at least for me, represents the ultimate catalog purchase from 2003: the singing trout (a.k.a. the “Boogie Bass”)!

If they could find that honey of a holiday gift, the service gets my seal of approval.

Of course, in a nanosecond, Google found it in multiple catalogs along with such holiday gems as the “singing fish” and the “TV Caddy.”

On a serious note, a search for “Ford F250 accessories” yielded some very helpful information on catalogs where I can get parts and goodies for my truck.

So, this service goes way beyond searching catalogs with only the “As Seen On TV” gadgets, and gets into some serious niche product information.

Back before the Internet, search engines, and online research, catalogs actually represented an inexpensive way for vendors to publish product information targeting a niche audience.

It makes perfect sense that the Web’s largest search engine should start cataloging catalogs and combine print publications with online search.

The only drawback to Google’s new catalog browser is that you can’t circle the items you really want (writing on your monitor tends to damage it) and then strategically leave the catalog where Santa (or your wife) can conveniently find it and catch a clue as to your greatest wish.

But, you can always send Santa a web link to the items on your list!

Which Affiliate Networks To Look Out For When Promoting?

by Gerardas Norkus

There are many horror stories about affiliate programs and networks. People have heard them over and over again, that some are even wary of joining one. The stories they may have heard are those related to illegal programs or pyramid schemes. Basically, this kind of market does not have real, worthy product.

You do not want to be associated with these schemes. It is obvious you want to be with a program that offers high quality product that you will readily endorse. The growing number of those who have joined already and are succeeding immensely is proof enough that there are reliable and quality affiliate programs out there.

Why participate in an affiliate program?

It allows you to work part-time. It gives you the opportunity to build a generous residual income. And it makes you an owner of a small business. Affiliate programs have already created lots of millionaires. They are the living testimony of how hard work; continuous prospecting, motivating and training others pay off.

If ever you are deciding to join one, you must take note that you are getting into something that is patterned to what you are capable of. This will be an assurance that you are capable of doing anything to come out successful.

How do you choose a good affiliate program to promote? Here are some tips you may want to look over before choosing one:

1. A program that you like and have interest in. One of the best ways of knowing if that is the kind of program you wish to promote is if you are interested in purchasing the product yourself. If that is the case, chances are, there are many others who are also interested in the same program and products.

2. Look for a program that is of high quality. For instance, look for one that is associated with many experts in that particular industry. This way, you are assured that of the standard of the program you will be joining into.

3. Join in the ones that offer real and viable products. How do you know this? Do some initial research. If possible, track down some of the members and customers to give you testimonial on the credibility of the program.

4. The program that is catering to a growing target market. This will ensure you that there will be more and continuous demands for your referrals. Make inquiries. There are forums and discussions you can participate in to get good and reliable feedbacks.

5. A program with a compensation plan that pays out a residual income and a payout of 30% or more would be a great choice. There are some programs offering this kind of compensation. Look closely for one. Do not waste your time with programs that do not reward substantially for your efforts.

6. Be aware of the minimum quotas that you must fulfill or sales target that is too hard to achieve. Some affiliate programs imposes pre-requisites before you get your commissions. Just be sure that you are capable of attaining their requirements.

7. Select one that has plenty of tools and resources that can help you grow the business in the shortest possible time. Not all affiliate programs have these capacities. Make use you decide on one with lots of helpful tools you can use.

8. Check out if the program has a proven system that can allow you to check your networks and compensation. Also check if they have it available online for you to check anytime and anywhere.

9. The program that is offering strong incentives for members to renew their membership each time. The affiliate program that provides continuous help and upgrades for its products have the tendency to retain its members. These things can assure the growth of your networks.

10. Be aware of the things that members are not happy about in a program. Like with the ones mentioned above, you can do your checking at discussion forums. If you know someone in that same program, there is ho harm asking if there are many downsides involved.

Have a thorough and intensive knowledge about the affiliate program and network you will be promoting on.

Knowing the kind of program you are getting yourself into will make you anticipate and prevent any future problems you may encounter.
