Internet Marketing

Aside from the nuts and bolts of where to register your domain name and purchasing a good economical hosting service, there are a few things to know about buying a good domain name, that only experience can teach. Here are a few tips to get you started on the right foot:

1. Buy only “.com” and don’t trouble yourself with the others. Although the domain name players have gone to some trouble to publicize and market to us about the availability of other extensions such as .org, .net, .us and others…there is still no real reason to buy anything but “.com.”

If you currently have a domain name that is not a “.com,” I strongly suggest you obtain it. Or, if that’s not possible, consider finding a new domain name.

The rationale is simple: if the point of having a website is to get people to visit it, the best rule of thumb is to make it easy to remember. If your customers have to think in order to get to your website, and maybe even have to type in a wrong domain first before they finally reach you…you want to change that so they don’t.

2. Buy your own personal name. What better way to make it easy for your customers to find you? As you become better known online, and as you build your customer database, it will become increasingly important for your customers to be able to find you based on your personal name.

Buying your personal name allows you to build credibility for your brand identity and makes it easy to “Google” you. Ever tried typing in just your first and last names at Google? Try it and see what happens. If you aren’t showing up in the results, you will want to work on this. And buying your own personal name as a domain name is a simple and very effective way to get going.

3. Buy the most common spelling mistakes for your domain. Even if you follow the advice in (2) above, it may be inevitable that some of your visitors will misspell your domain. It’s human error.

So although these may not be obvious to you at first, it’s worthwhile putting your antennae up in order to figure it out. The first hint? If you misspell your own domain name, chances are others will. Be sure to grab the most common ones.

Example: www.Google.com, www.Gogle.com and www.Gooogle.com all go to the same page. Why? Google “gets” that lots of people type in too few or too many “Os” and has set it up so everyone gets to the right place.

4. Double check your domain names for odd or unintentional meanings. This one is a bit mixed, because if your domain name turns out to be something quite funny, it might be just that much more memorable and bring you free traffic. But you may not want to be remembered in that way, and the traffic that results could be a detriment to you. (The wrong target market just clogs up your system, uses bandwidth, and creates customer service inquiries you don’t want.)

So do a double check to see if your domain says something you didn’t expect.

What do I mean?

www.newsextracts.com is actually a clipping service, but could be interpreted to be something rather more racy.

www.whorepresents.com is actually a site where you can find a given actor’s agent or manager, but can be interpreted to be something else.

Last but not least, as with everything online, ebusiness owners have the luxury of easily and quickly asking our customers most anything, including “What do you think is the best domain name for this project?”

So when in doubt, ask your customers what they think. Give them a choice of a few domains you’ve narrowed it down to, and offer a prize of some sort to encourage participation. It works, and you’ll end up avoiding potholes along the way.

Let’s say that you’re creating a website for Barb’s Specialty Pet Products. Should the domain name be barbsspecialtypetproducts.com?

Perhaps — but don’t stop there. Having the right domain name, or domain names, can bring more traffic to your site.

Why more than one domain name?

One domain is all you need to set up a website. But with more domains directing to your site, you can have these additional benefits:

- Bring site visitors who type variations of your domain name

- Acquire traffic that might otherwise go to your competition

- Harness the marketing power of keyword domains

Your primary domain name

If it’s feasible, use your business or brand name in your primary domain. People will remember it and associate it with your business. Also consider the following factors when choosing your primary domain.

Domain name extensions

Should your primary domain end with .com, .net, or .biz, or with a country-specific extension such as .ca or .co.uk?

If your website is aimed at people in a specific country, having a country-specific domain can help:

- Site visitors will recognize right away that the business has a presence in the country of the extension. They may therefore be more comfortable buying from you.

- Some country-specific search results include sites with the relevant country-specific domain extension even if the site isn’t hosted in that country.

On the other hand, if you’re targeting an international audience, a country-specific domain could work against you. People from outside the country of the extension may be less inclined to buy if the business looks foreign to them.

If you want to attract both people within your country and those in other countries, have both. Each domain could direct to the same site, with each audience seeing the domain intended for them. For country-specific search results, the primary domain should be the country-specific one.

Chances are that the .com domain you want is already taken. If you use the .net or .biz version, you risk having potential site visitors go to your .com competition instead. Be sure to use the full domain name on all promotional material to reduce this risk.

Domain name length

A short domain is easier to remember, it has less risk of being mistyped, and it’ll fit easily on your business cards and correspondence.

Conversely, if a short name doesn’t represent your business, it’s more difficult for people to remember. The short names you like may already be taken anyway.

GoDaddy.com – World’s #1 Domain Name Registrar

If your business name is up to three easy-to-spell words, it’ll probably work as a domain name. For a longer business name, the initials or just one or two words may be easier than remembering a combination of words.

Secondary domain names

Secondary domains directing to your site are for online use:

- For people who type your primary domain name incorrectly

- For people who search for your products or services online

Typing and spelling variations

How many ways can people spell and type your business name?

barbsspecialtypetproducts.com

barbs-specialty-pet-products.com

barbspecialtypetproducts.com

barbsspecialitypetproducts.com

barbsspecialitypetproducts.com

barbspecialtyproducts.com

barbspecialtyproduct.com

Hyphens aren’t recommended for your primary domain. When people tell others about your site, they’re likely to omit the hyphens. They may also forget to type them.

For secondary domains, hyphens make long domains easier to read. Each word stands out when people see your domain. However, domains such as buy-keyword-product-now.com make some people view hyphenated domains, especially those with more than one hyphen, as spam-like.

Having the words in domains separated may help some search engines recognize keywords. With Google, though, hyphens don’t make any difference.

Consider all of these variations for secondary domain names:

- With and without hyphens

- Different ways of spelling some words

- Singular and plural versions of nouns

- Extensions with .com and .net as well as a country-specific extension if relevant

What people search for

If you want to find the website for Time magazine, you might do a search for it, or you might try typing in time.com. If you do the latter, you’ll find yourself at the Time site.

This type of search behavior extends to generic words too. Searching for dog collars? Try dogcollar.com, for example, and you’ll be redirected to dogidcollar.com. Do you want life insurance? Lifeinsurance.com redirects to nmfn.com (and so does northwesternmutualfinancialnetwork.com).

While having keyword domain names may not draw a lot of site visitors, using them is a technique to consider.

How to use more than one domain

Set up your website with your primary domain, and use that domain on your correspondence and with your customers.

Point secondary domains to your site using URL forwarding (also called domain forwarding, domain redirect, or URL redirect). To have the secondary domain appear in the browser, use domain masking. You can set up these features when you log in to your account with your domain registrar (if your registrar offers these services).

With domains that are simply variations of your primary domain, you can expect additional traffic just from having set up these domains. With domains that contain keywords, you can get more from them by using them to list your site in online directories. When these domains appear in search results, searchers will see the keywords.

The next step

Once you decide on the available domains that you want, register them immediately. They might not be available tomorrow.

If you don’t already have a business name, you’ll find it easier to market your business online if you choose a primary domain and a business name together. If your first choice for a business name doesn’t work well with any available domains, consider a business name that you can easily market with an available domain. Once you’ve registered that domain name and your business name, register secondary domains and put them to use.

Is it worth registering multiple domains for one site? That depends on your site, but any variations that you don’t register will be available for competitors to register and use. If a domain is valuable to a competitor, it’s valuable to you.

Probably, you have heard about making money online. Also, you have seen lots of different programs and systems that help you earn cash on the Internet. It could be selling stuffs, being an affiliate, running a website, etc. Now, there is another surprising concept: making money with your own domain names. But, is it really true?

Shortly, I have to say that it is possible to earn a living with domain names. Today, there are lots of people starting their own businesses based on this kind of opportunity. But, first of all, you will need to know how it works.

Basically, there are 3 different ways to make money with your own domain names:

1. Buying domain names at low prices, then selling them higher:

Believe it or not, one of the most important secrets of a powerful and popular website is having a good domain name. Thus, many website owners are looking for such domain names and willing to pay a lot in order to own them. Suppose, you had registered that domain name earlier, so you are the person who sets the price and win the deal. That´s it. You have purchased the domain name at a very low price and have sold it many times higher. But the secret is that how you could get those good domain names. Actually, several years ago, it was not difficult to register a good domain name. But, today, it has become harder and harder. Yet, there is one promising solution: buying expired domain names. Everyday, thousands of domain names are being expired due to forgetting the payment of annual fees. After a while, the expired domain names will be deleted and then be available for everybody who wants to purchase it. Among those expired domain names, you can find some valuable, well-established and attractive domain names.

There are some sources on the net where you can find the needed information about expired domain names. On the other hand, you can find some sources to put your domain names for selling. At those auction places, you will see how the customers are bidding and competing in order to grab your domain name. Doing this business properly with working carefully can bring you a lot of profits.

2. Selling advertisements on your parked domain names:

Another way in this approach is to put advertisements on your parked domain name. You register a domain name, then park it on a specific marketplace. Besides, most of them allow you to choose some keywords related to the topic of your domain name. Afterwards, you can see the related advertisements on your parked domain name as sponsored links. These ads are often based on pay per click action and you will get paid whenever someone clicks on the ads. This way is a good idea, even if you intend to sell your domain name later. In fact, the earnings depend on the amount of your visitors. So, it would not be a huge amount of money. However, it could help you earn extra money with your own domain name.

3. Redirecting your domain name to a specific page:

The third method is actually an accessory way. For example, you are an affiliate, a person who sells the others´products or services. In most cases, you, as an affiliate, have a web page like the seller´s, but the difference is your URL address, that is to say your domain name. It is too long and full of various numbers and letters. Sometimes, it would be difficult to market or advertise a page with the URL address like that. Thus, you may need a better web address. So, it is time to register a related domain name and redirect it to your affiliate page. It means, whenever someone types your domain name in the address bar, the page will automatically be forwarded to the affiliate web page. In this way, you send traffic to that web page and if a sale is made, you will make money. So, it could be another way to make money with your registered domain name.

The above mentioned methods are the main ways that help you make money with your own domain names. But, naturally, it is business and there is always risk with any businesses and don´t forget that the whole process of making money depends mostly on your ambitions, individual capacities, expertise, business experiences and desires.

Good Luck!

You have a fantastic idea for a business online. You know your industry and your products inside and out. You have a great marketing plan and you even shopped around and got the best rates for your merchant account, your shopping cart program for your website and you even calculated the shipping for your products so you got the best deal possible.

Then, you bought a domain name, web hosting and your brother-in-law offered to do your website for free which saved you thousands of dollars. You held your breath as your site was loaded onto the server and …nobody came.

You can probably go back to two reasons that your site isn’t working for you.

Number one, the pages on your website aren’t targeted so the search engines can index them for relevance. This means if you’re selling electric dog polishers on your website, then you should name the specific page with the subject, mention that subject a few times on the page and if you have an image of an electric dog polisher – use the alt text option to describe the image as well because not all web surfers use images when they are checking out web pages.

If you want the search engines to index your pages properly, give the text robots (called “spiders”) food in the form of keywords that pertain to your website So the next person looking on Google for electric dog polishers will find your website.

Number two will be a bit more labor intensive to fix. Your website needs to look professional. This means no blinking text, no flashing police siren lights over your specials and sales, no dancing dog graphics; in fact – your site should be as fast loading and low graphic as possible. Look at some of the top sites on the internet such as Yahoo, Amazon, and MSN, they all have light backgrounds, graphics are kept small and most of all, their pages are text rich. Don’t copy any of these designs for your site but rather learn from then and incorporate those winning techniques on your own pages.

You may fire a best Web Design firm if you’re not proficient in html yourself. You need someone that can make your site clean and fast loading. Use graphics on your site but keep them small – offer the option for someone to click and see a larger picture of an item.

Also, create a text only page that is a site map listing every single page on your website so people can look up where they want to be quickly and the search engine spiders can index your website just as quickly.

Make sure that your shopping cart is easy to use and all the pages work. If your sales method isn’t easy to use – your customers will go elsewhere where the shopping carts work quickly, are easy to use and don’t require a lot of labor intense information giving. Also, put a privacy statement on every page – if you don’t sell your customer’s information to third parties, let them know.

The more people know about your site and what your policies are, the more comfortable they will be doing business with you.

And those are just a few tips to get your new website rocking’ and rolling towards success!

A lot us who are into adsense business know that to increase adsense earning potential, we got to increase that clickthrough rate. This is true when you have limited traffic going to your site. So it’s crucial to get the most out of the available traffic that you are having.

But just how many of you have come across articles or websites teaching you about increasing your adsense clickthrough rate, talking about the same thing?

A lot right?

They tell you about blending your ads into the background, using text ads rather than image ads, reducing other advertisement distraction, upper fold ads placement and yada yada yada…

While these tactics are not wrong and in fact might help you to increase the adsense earnings in the long run, but nonetheless, there is another method that can be implemented which will work like gangbuster.

Once done correctly, you will typically notice a much higher clickthrough rate than the rest of the tactics you may have used.

This method simply requires you to deploy videos into your web pages.

And yes, you would employ the use of videos alongside your adsense pages!

In this method, what you need to do is to source out good relevant content videos from either youtube.com or video.google.com.

Getting the videos onto your web pages is just the matter of copy and paste the object codes onto your html source.

For instance, if you were to source out video content from youtube, you can highlight and copy the embedding codes from the ‘embed’ column on the top right corner.

Then you would paste the codes onto your web pages and voila you’ll instantly have great content along side with multimedia rich videos.

But the real secret doesn’t just stop here. You have to make the right placement for better clickthrough rate.

I would suggest that you modify the video border width and height from the codes to match with a 250X250 adsense ads which are place side by side with the video.

Using the example above, you can see not only you can provide the page with good content about the subject, but also the corresponding video on top of the page. Then the adsense ads which are residing next to the video are shown which aptly complement the whole subject.

This video usage was known to have increased the clickthrough rate as much as 100%.

Try it yourself and always remember to test the placement on your websites. You can always test by modifying the width and the height of the videos to match against different format of adsense ads, as well as blending with different kinds of colors.

Every serious online business owner eats, sleeps and breaths targeted traffic to their website. They spend the most money and time trying to attract first-time visitors to their sites in hopes of generating new sales and subscribers. But, believe it or not, it’s easier to increase your income by simply selling more of the visitors you already get than trying to chase down more traffic.

The solution? Tracking & testing! Probably the most overlooked and underutilized, but certainly the most powerful strategy for increasing sales and opt-in subscriptions. If you spend any time or money on advertising, you must start testing and tracking. Simply put, “tracking” means you measure the effectiveness of each individual advertising source you use to promote your business.

For example, if you advertise in email newsletters, you should know how effective each newsletter ad rates compared to all the others in terms of sales and subscribers generated. This enables you to know whether an ad makes or loses money. Testing means you constantly look for ways to improve your ads in small, incremental amounts that add up over time.

The most common (and effective) tests you can run are A-B split tests, which pit two variables against each other to determine which converts more lookers into buyers. Split testing headlines, price points, and guarantee periods make, from my experience, the best places to start testing.

The reason testing and tracking can double your profits (or more) lies in the power of small, incremental improvements. Lets say, for example, you decide to do a series of split tests on a website that currently converts 1 in every 100 visitors (1% conversion). You test, headline, price, guarantee and a payment plan. If each of the 4 tests yields a .25% increase in conversion, you would not see an increase in sales to 2% (4x.25%), but actually an increase to almost 2.5% since each improvement builds on the last!

The most basic tool in testing and tracking revolves around the use of advertising link tracker software. These tools measure the number of clicks on individual advertisements (text links, banners, pay-per-click ads, etc) and then measure sales or subscriptions generated as a result.

You get two choices with link trackers: a hosted service or software you install on your own server. A hosted service offers the advantage of easy setup and use. Most of the time you just sign up for the service, enter the link you want to track, get your tracking code, and you’re off to the races.

The disadvantage of a hosted service is that, if it gets abused, using the URL of the service in your links can get your emails blocked or your pages banned by search engines. The advantage of hosting the software on your own server is that you maintain a higher degree of technical control and can avoid the banning issues. The main disadvantage of hosting it yourself involves the fact that you really don’t have anyone to call for help if something goes wrong.

One of the most popular hosted link trackers online is HyperTracker.com, though I’ve not used the service. My favorite link tracker is actually part of an integrated e-commerce system at http://www.MysiteSales.com. This service enables you to track your sales and subscriptions made through the shopping cart.

Two options for software you install on your own server are Dynatracker.com and ProAnalyzer.com. Both provide decent link tracking, though no system I’ve tested provides 100% accurate results. But, with that said, failure to test means you’re leaving money on the table by wasting visitors you could otherwise convert to buyers with basic effort at improving your sales messages.

One of the most important skills of any marketer (or anyone else for that matter) is the ability to do research quickly, effectively and to communicate information that differs from what “the masses” do. This article presents a 3 step strategy for using blogs to help in this. Over the past year or so, blogs have become huge. Before the 2004 U.S. election, scarce anyone heard of blogs. But with the bloggers doing their own version of the news, even computer illiterate people have at least heard of blogs.

So I want to talk about blogs. But not from the usual angle of creating and maintaining one. I want to talk about it from the standpoint of USING other people’s blogs effectively.

If you already blog, then this will be obvious to you, though you might have been so focused on creation that you didn’t pay attention to consumption. Common problem. I’m here to help you get past it.

The amazing thing about blogs – the good ones at least – is that they are like finding information gold mines.

The owners maintain them and their quality for several reasons.

1. To generate new content that search engines love to keep people coming back for more 1. To sell their stuff in a low pressure marketing context. 3. Self-fulfillment through self-expression. There are likely other reasons, but I consider these the relevant ones.

These motivations push the publishers to keep the quality of good blogs high. If they stop, their traffic dwindles. If they start hyping stuff, then the low-pressure context is gone.

Thus, it is that blogs form one of the most intensely useful sources of free information anywhere.

So the question is, do you effectively blog surf? And more to the point, how do you do it? Well, I don’t have THE ANSWER for how to do it. But I do have some suggestions that have generated great results for me.

1 – Google the following – with the punctuation as I show them:

+blog +”subject phrase”

Thus if I’m interested in blogs on fly fishing (a niche if there ever was one), my google would be

+blog +”fly fishing” (over 61,000 matches)

If my interest was in sequential autoresponders then my search would be: +blog +”sequential autoresponders” (243 matches)

This gives me the ability to get a list of blogs on the subject which I then …

2 – Bookmark for future reference. Create a folder for, say, fly fishing. All the high quality fly fishing blogs you find go into that folder. Make new folders for blogs on other subjects.

Now if I’m interested in seeing what’s new in fly fishing, I go to my bookmarks and have a virtual field trip.

But there’s one more thing I do, too. And this is critical if you want to keep your blog surfing fresh:

3 – Bookmark the search results page.

Why?

Because the results delivered up by the canned search will vary over time and as Google changes their criteria. The top blog today might turn out to be 5th next month and a complete newcomer might end up 1st on the list.

Now you have an effective method for blog surfing. Enjoy.

Introduction

Pop-ups are one of the best tools in an Internet marketers tool box. A lot of the top Internet marketers use them, and for good reasons; they increase sales and response rates.

As of late the traditional window based pop-ups are rarely being used by anyone any more; this is for two main reasons:

1. The are incredibly annoying to your website visitors as they change window focus (i.e. To force visitors browsing experience to a new browser window).
2. They can be easily blocked by pop-up blockers.

However, the new sort type of pop-up is infinitely preferable to the old because:

1. The new sort of pop-up won’t change the browser focus, and can be designed to make it look like it relates to the parent page.
2. The new sort of pop-up can’t be blocked by pop-up blockers!

So how do I create these free unblock-able pops then?

While there are paid for software solutions out there, if you know HTML, which; even for the paid for solutions you need to know anyway! Then there is really no reason why you should be paying good money for something which can be done just as well (if not better) for free.

The software we are going to use to create our pop-ups is called QuickPop, which can be downloaded for free from JodSoft here:

http://www.jodsoft.com/quickpop/

Once you have this software creating pop-ups is really easy.

The first thing you need to do is to create a HTML file that you want to use as a pop-up; for instance this could be a special offer, or a mailing list opt-in page.

Now that you’ve got your page sorted upload it to a suitable directory on your site, also upload quickpop.php to that same directory.

You have only one step to go before the pop-ups will appear on your site, and that is integration. To integrate the pop-up with any page on your site. Just copy and paste the following HTML code into any page on your site, modifying “your_directory” to where you installed quickpop.php, and “your_popup.htm” to the name of your pop-up file:

That’s it! If you now go any page where you copy and pasted the above code you should see your pop-up appear!

To update your pop-up all you need to do is modify your pop-up html file.

If you want the pop-up to only appear once then copy and paste the following code:

Now your pop-up will only appear once!

Have fun!

Regards,
Jody

I just came across a product with the most incredible bonus package I’ve, quite possibly, ever seen. You know how you’ll be reading about a product or service and your interest gains momentum with each paragraph?

That’s the sort of reaction I had while reading the salespage for Instant Adsense Empire. I’ve been online long enough and have read and experienced enough to know that this one is a winner.

Then I got to the bonuses. I was going to count them so I could include a number in this post, but I got tired of scrolling…counting….scrolling…..counting….. So, I thought, “I’ll just count the ones I would actually buy by themselves.” Again, I got tired of scrolling…counting….scrolling…..counting…..

If you’re very familiar with this blog, you’ll know that we primarily provide you with what we think is killer information. (The kind that will help you achieve all you want, and then some!) Rarely, very rarely, do we put a product in front of your eyes. We don’t want the blog to start resembling a store. In order for a product to become an exception to this rule, it would have to do more than just impress us, and it’d have to do more than just “blow us away.” It’d have to be a product that we have either purchased or will purchase. We feel that by doing this, when we recommend something, you’ll know just how special it is.

This is the perfect example. Instant Adsense Empire is a package that would stand beautifull on its own, and if it didn’t have the most impressive bonuses I’ve ever seen, I’d still be writing this post.

However, the bonuses are like Buttercream Icing on a 6 layer cake! You’ll really have to check them out for yourself – and when you do, notice that the majority of them have “Resell Rights,” which means you could put up a salespage (or blog) and turn around and sell them, yourself. And make even more money!

This one’s really a winner – check it out>>>>> Instant Adsense Empire.

I’m a Stephen Pierce fan and have been since I first heard him speak. If he writes it, I read it….If he says it, I listen…

Below is a great article by the man, himself, that deals with getting traffic to your website. Read it carefully and put his words into practice. Also, be sure to check out Rush Hour Web Traffic.

10 Sure-Fire Phrases That Will Increase Your Website Traffic
by Stephen Pierce

1. “Bookmark This Web Site Now” Tell your visitors to bookmark your web site. They may see your web site listed in their bookmarks and visit again. You should also give then a good reason to bookmark your site. For example tell them you add new content everyday.

2. “Subscribe To Our Free E-zine” Tell your visitors to subscribe to your e-zine. When they subscribe you’ll capture their e-mail address. Every time they read your e-zine, it will remind them to return to your site.

3. “Participate On Our Discussion Board” Ask your visitors to participate on your online discussion board. By participating they will meet other people. By meeting other people, they will revisit your web site on a regular basis to stay in contact with them.

4. “Sign Our Guestbook” Ask your visitors to sign your guest book. When people sign your guestbook you may get valuable feedback or constructive criticism on how to improve your web site. This may help you increase traffic to your web site.

5. “Use Our Free Content On Your Site Or In Your E-zine” Allow your visitors to use your articles on their own web site or in their e-zine. Just ask them to include your resource box. This will spread your advertising all over the internet.
