Gorgeous Website with One Tiny Problem
The Offficial website of the best Key Lime Pie in the world, the Blond Giraffe is an example of near-perfect webdesign . When you first arrive on the website, it’s almost breathtaking (be sure to have your audio on) – it’s different, fresh and innovative. Having been lucky enough to visit the Keys before (and strongly hoping that same luck strikes again one day), I can say that all of the sights and sounds beautifully capture the region. It sets the stage for the essence of the products, the company, and the slice of Heaven they live on.
The first impression you get is,”This is going to be special.” And it is, the design and effects are off the charts. A company couldn’t ask for much more from it’s website. It’s a lot like a physical store or business – you want people to immediately know that they’re in store for something special. Secondly, you want to back that impression up with all the special your visitor(s) can handle.
If you want to see a company doing just that – and web design that’s leading the way, check out the Blond Giraffe.com. The ONLY thing in the world that I find any fault with is the navigation. You’ll see what I mean. People who aren’t really familiar with the internet and haven’t seen many, many, many different websites might be in a bit of a bind.
That’s one of the golden rules of web design – never play hide and seek with your navigational links. What seems “cool” and “cute” to the designer is little more than frustrating to certain visitors. The problem lies in the fact that those of us who work at the computer at least 8 hours a day expect everyone else to be as familiar with designs and navigational tricks as we are. But there are more people unlike us than like us. People who get on for just an hour or two at night want things plain, simple, and very obvious.
That’s why a really kicky navigational ploy is applaudable and amusing – but, personally, I’d also put a plain Jane navigation to the left or at the bottom. The Does would certainly appreciate it – because, guess where they go if they can’t find their way around your place.
Right, they go someplace else. The Does’ haven’t much patience.
